FAMILY CLASS IMMIGRATION

Family Class Immigration allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close family members for permanent residence, helping families reunite and build their lives in Canada.

This program prioritizes family unity and offers pathways for spouses, common-law partners, conjugal partners, dependent children, parents, grandparents, and, in rare cases, other eligible relatives.

SPOUSAL AND COMMON-LAW PARTNER SPONSORSHIP

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence if they meet the eligibility criteria. Sponsorship can be applied under two streams:

For individuals living outside Canada or those in Canada who do not plan to stay during the application process. This class also applies to conjugal partners and dependent children.

Sponsors must provide financial support for the basic needs of the sponsored individual for three years and ensure they do not rely on social assistance. Spouses in Canada may also qualify for an open work permit during the application process if they meet specific requirements.

PARENT AND GRANDPARENT SPONSORSHIP

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP).

  • Process: The PGP operates through a lottery system where potential sponsors submit an expression of interest, and selected applicants are invited to apply.

  • Financial Responsibility: Sponsors must meet minimum income requirements and sign a 20-year undertaking to provide financial support and ensure the sponsored individual does not rely on social assistance.

DEPENDENT CHILD SPONSORSHIP

This category allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children under 22 years old who are unmarried, or older children who depend on their parents due to a mental or physical condition.

  • Eligibility: The child must meet dependency requirements, and their inclusion in the application is mandatory, even if they live with another parent or guardian.

  • Commitment: Sponsors are responsible for supporting the child for 10 years or until they turn 25, whichever comes first.

OTHER ELIGIBLE FAMILY MEMBERS

In rare cases, Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor other relatives, such as orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren under 18, or a close relative if they have no other eligible family members.

  • Conditions: These cases require specific circumstances and careful review to ensure eligibility.

Family Class Immigration provides opportunities for families to reunite while ensuring financial stability and adherence to Canada’s sponsorship commitments.
